Laser welding is an important metal joining process widely used in industries such as automotive manufacturing and aerospace. The principle behind laser welding involves using a high-energy laser beam to rapidly heat the surface of the workpiece, causing localized melting. Welding is then achieved as the molten metal diffuses and solidifies at the interface, forming a strong bond between the materials.
Specifically, the laser welding process involves several key steps. First, the laser beam is emitted and focused—concentrating the high-energy laser beam into an incredibly small focal point, achieving an energy density of up to hundreds of thousands of watts per square centimeter. Next, the laser beam is directed onto the workpiece surface, where nearly all of its energy is absorbed almost instantly, causing the surface temperature to rise rapidly to thousands of degrees Celsius and triggering localized melting. Following this, the cooling and solidification phase begins: as the metal in the weld area cools quickly, it solidifies into a uniform weld seam. Finally, the weld quality is thoroughly inspected by evaluating factors such as the weld’s appearance, chemical composition, and mechanical properties, ensuring that the final product meets stringent standards.
Laser welding boasts a simple and efficient working principle, enabling high-quality welds and making it widely used in industrial production.
