The research teams led by Leng Yuxin and Du Juan from the State Key Laboratory of Strong-Field Laser Physics at the Shanghai Institute of Optics and Fine Mechanics, Chinese Academy of Sciences, have collaborated with Professor Tang Jiang from Huazhong University of Science and Technology and Professor Zhang Han’s team from Shenzhen University. Driven by the miniaturization of laser technology and guided by their exploration into the luminescence principles and mechanisms of novel gain media, they have successfully overcome the limitations imposed by the traditional diffraction limit. As a result, they have, for the first time, reduced the physical size of an all-dielectric, room-temperature subwavelength nanolaser device down to 50 nanometers—currently the smallest known all-dielectric nanolaser in existence.

It is reported that optical information processing can boost data transmission speeds by up to a thousandfold while significantly reducing energy consumption. However, photons are far more challenging to control than electrons, making it a critical step to achieve photon manipulation on nanoscale, highly integrated chips in the same precise and reliable manner as with electrons. Consequently, developing new micro- and nano-scale laser devices that are smaller in size, offer higher gain, and exhibit lower losses has become one of the key challenges essential for realizing a major breakthrough in photonic chip technology.

To overcome this limitation, the research team has developed a novel deep-subwavelength perovskite micro-nano laser measuring just 50 nanometers in size.

Researchers used femtosecond transient absorption spectroscopy to uncover the luminescence dynamics mechanism of a novel quasi-two-dimensional perovskite thin-film gain medium, revealing a net gain lifetime of up to 558 cm⁻¹ with a duration of approximately 50 picoseconds. They also analyzed how ultrafast cascaded energy transfer, along with contributions from singlet and triplet excitons, significantly enhance the gain performance. Inspired by these exceptional gain characteristics, they combined the 40-nanometer-thick gain medium with an ultra-compact "sandwich" structure—featuring a 10-nanometer UV-adhesive layer and a silica substrate—to achieve stable, single-mode picosecond laser operation at room temperature, with a laser linewidth as narrow as 50 nanometers.

Quasi-two-dimensional Perovskite Thin Film Luminescence Dynamics and Laser Properties

In 2018, the team’s researchers first achieved operation of a room-temperature all-dielectric micro- and nanoscale laser with dimensions down to the subwavelength scale of 400 nanometers. This latest work further pushes the size of such lasers into the deep-subwavelength regime.

According to China Science Daily, Du Juan stated that combining the simple "sandwich" structure—first developed in this study—could further accelerate the advancement of perovskite lasers and help overcome the "bottleneck" of insufficient on-chip light sources for optoelectronic interconnections on chips.

Currently, this research has been published in the *Journal of the American Chemical Society—Nano*. The work was also supported by several funding programs, including the National Natural Science Foundation of China, the Chinese Academy of Sciences' Pioneer Class B Special Project, the Shanghai Outstanding Academic/Technical Leader Program, and the General Funding Scheme of the China Postdoctoral Science Foundation.
