SemiNex has partnered with Futai Technology to introduce multi-junction semiconductor laser diodes featuring safe wavelengths ranging from 1310 nm to 1550 nm. These lasers deliver more than 20 times the number of photons per second compared to 905nm LiDAR systems, while offering a detection range three times greater than that of 905nm technology. This innovative product line is set to accelerate the mass-market adoption of autonomous vehicles. Additionally, SemiNex’s new 1550nm multi-junction laser diode—designed with a 95μm aperture width—can achieve an impressive output power of up to 80W. At this wavelength, its power output surpasses that of current laser diodes by over three times, and it is now available in high-volume production.

According to the emission limits for eye safety (AEL) specified by the International Electrotechnical Commission (IEC), multi-junction 905 nm laser radar systems are limited to a detection range of 100 meters, making them ideal for niche applications such as private security systems, warehouse automation, and limited-use public driving features. Meanwhile, SemiNex’s new multi-junction lasers deliver high power, extended-range, cost-effective, and eye-safe laser radar solutions tailored for autonomous trains, aircraft, and vehicles.

“SemiNex has invested three years in R&D to develop a long-term, cost-effective solution that overcomes existing technological limitations. We see this as a game-changer and believe it will fundamentally transform how large LiDAR companies approach the challenge of long-range detection,” said David Bean, CEO of SemiNex.

The new SemiNex multi-junction laser diode enables eye-safe, autonomous LiDAR systems to achieve detection ranges of over 250 meters. Current 905nm solutions offer visibility within 100 meters, typically at vehicle speeds below 25 mph. Over the past decade, LiDAR manufacturers have relied on two primary laser approaches for time-of-flight LiDAR systems: either 905nm laser diodes or 1550nm fiber lasers. While 905nm laser diodes are limited in detection range due to eye-safety regulations, 1550nm fiber lasers—though ideal in terms of performance—are too bulky and costly for widespread adoption in the consumer market. To date, no solution has successfully combined the affordability, compact form factor, and efficiency of a 905nm laser diode with the long-range detection capabilities and eye safety required for both automotive and industrial applications.

Neither of these solutions can help the automotive industry achieve its goal of commercializing LiDAR. The lack of a highly efficient, low-cost, 200-meter-range, eye-safe LiDAR system is holding back the industry from scaling up the commercialization of autonomous vehicles—vehicles that currently cannot exceed speeds of 25 miles per hour. "SemiNex’s multi-junction laser diodes have truly changed the game," says Ed McIntyre, SemiNex’s Director of Sales and Marketing. "Now there’s a cost-effective, long-range, eye-safe alternative available in both 9XXnm diodes and 1550nm fiber laser options."

Today, the LiDAR market for automotive and industrial applications is projected to reach $981 million. However, with ongoing technological advancements and increasing adoption, the market is expected to grow significantly, expanding to $2.8 billion by 2025. A key challenge in current automotive LiDAR technology is developing a cost-effective semiconductor laser diode that delivers high peak power for long-range applications while adhering to eye-safe wavelength standards. SemiNex’s 1550nm triple-junction multi-emitter laser diode addresses this need, enabling operation at pulse repetition rates ranging from 200 to 400 kHz with pulse widths between 2 ns and 100 ns. This innovative design provides up to three times the peak power of single-emitter solutions, enhancing both resolution and penetration efficiency—while ensuring critical eye safety. Additionally, SemiNex offers multi-emitter laser diodes spanning wavelengths from 1310 nm to 1550 nm, allowing customers to meet their specific requirements for varying aperture sizes and cavity lengths.

Ed. McIntyre, Director of Sales and Marketing at SemiNex, stated: "SemiNex multi-junction laser diodes enable vehicles to achieve autonomous navigation at speeds previously unattainable with existing technology—making self-driving cars a reality within the next five years."

In the China market, thanks to our close collaboration with Photonteck Company Limited, China's regional distributor, these high-performance products have already seen limited-scale applications in relevant domestic projects, providing strong core support to local customers.
