These five major "bottleneck" projects span key Wuhan industry sectors, including optical communications, integrated circuits, optoelectronics, life sciences, and gene therapy. Among them, the project titled "Core Technology Research and Industrialization of High-Speed Optical Communication Semiconductor Laser Chip" aims to address quality stability issues in the mass production of 25Gb/s DFB chips and 56Gb/s EML chips. By doing so, it seeks to break the current reliance on foreign suppliers for high-end optical chips, thereby strengthening and expanding Wuhan's thriving optical communication industry. The total funding allocated to this project amounts to 30 million yuan.

"Key Manufacturing Process Technology for 12-Inch RF-SOI Chips" is a critical technology in the integrated circuit industry, enabling the development of chips that meet the demands of RF front-end applications. This innovation will help establish an independent and controllable supply chain for RF chips, filling the current gap in China's 12-inch RF front-end chip market and driving rapid growth in Wuhan's mobile device industry. The project has been allocated funding of 30 million yuan.

As a key player in the midstream of the laser industry chain, fiber lasers have a multiplier effect—driving demand for downstream laser processing equipment as well as high-end manufacturing sectors such as automotive, electronics, machinery, and new energy industries. The recently unveiled "Key Technologies for 100kW Ultra-High-Power Fiber Lasers" will fill the domestic gap in 100kW-class ultra-high-power fiber lasers, breaking through the major bottleneck that has previously hindered the growth and expansion of Wuhan's laser industry. The project is allocated a funding of 30 million yuan, matching the amount of the previous initiative.
The "Key Technologies and Product Development in Antibodies and Molecular Enzymes" project is listed with a funding amount of 15 million yuan. The initiative aims to gradually replace imported products by achieving breakthroughs in critical R&D technologies, further solidifying and strengthening Wuhan's leading position in the life science tools industry.
Meanwhile, the "Core Technology Research and Product Development for Gene Therapy," listed with a budget of 30 million yuan, focuses on discovering novel targets for gene therapies targeting cancers and genetic disorders. It seeks groundbreaking advancements in areas such as somatic cell transgene technology and gene-editing techniques, while also developing innovative gene therapy tools and companion diagnostic products. Additionally, the project explores comprehensive solutions to ensure the safety and manage potential risks associated with gene therapy—activities that are crucial for Wuhan’s ambitious goal of building a trillion-yuan-scale biohealth and biotechnology industry.
It is reported that these major projects will adopt a collaborative approach—driven by market needs, with enterprises as the main players and integrating industry, academia, research, and application—to carry out end-to-end, integrated research efforts. For each project, the matching funds provided by the winning organizations will be at least twice the amount of the city's science and technology R&D funding.
Wuhan City announced that its next step will focus on key areas such as 3D storage chips, silicon-photonics chips, next-generation display materials, and high-end medical imaging equipment, implementing a "challenge-based leadership" mechanism to tackle these critical challenges. At the same time, the city will proactively plan for emerging fields like future networks, quantum information, bio-breeding, brain science, advanced materials, and aerospace technologies, fostering collaborative R&D of foundational and disruptive technologies across industries. This initiative aims to accelerate the building of first-mover advantages and secure a leading position in tomorrow's cutting-edge industries.
